Orthopaedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Specialist

He is currently the Medical Director for the Little League World Series, the Head Team Physician for Lycoming College Athletics, a team orthopedist for the Williamsport Crosscutters (MLB Draft League) and serves as an orthopedic surgeon for various local high schools in the Williamsport and Lycoming County region.

Dr. Kunkel grew up in the Northeast, mainly in the Albany, NY area. He played baseball for Division II Saint Michael’s College, winning Offensive Player of the Year as a junior and served as a team captain during his Senior year.  Following graduation from St. Michael’s, he attended medical school at the University of New England in Maine.  Upon graduation of medical school, he completed Orthopedic Surgery Residency training at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA where he trained under surgeons from the Rothman Institute including the former Orthopedic Surgeon for the Philadelphia 76ers as well as with the team physicians for the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Flyers.  He then furthered his Sports Surgery specialty training by completing a fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas where he won the Fellow Research Award and worked with the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Rice University and the NASA Astronaut Corps.

Dr. Kunkel specializes in arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery and has a specific interest in the treatment of athletic knee and shoulder injuries. These injuries and procedures include knee ligament reconstruction including ACL and multi-ligament (PCL, MCL, LCL) knee reconstruction, cartilage restoration and preservation, extensor mechanism realignment, thrower’s shoulder injuries, shoulder instability, labrum and rotator cuff injuries.

Dr. Kunkel and his family now live in the Williamsport area and enjoy spending time outdoors as a family.  He also enjoys playing golf, physical fitness, watching professional and collegiate athletics and reading historical non-fiction.
